EFLM LabX report by Zeliha Ahsen GÜNEŞ, Turkey

I am Zeliha Ahsen GÜNEŞ, a medical doctor specializing in Clinical Biochemistry in Ankara Oncology Research and Training Hospital. I was honored to participate in the EFLM LabX Exchange Program, which took place between 25–29 August 2025 at the Department of Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics, Medical University of Białystok. The training was coordinated under the guidance of Assoc. Prof. Olga M. Koper-Lenkiewicz whom is highly experienced specialist in the field of laboratory medicine.
The primary aim of my participation was to expand my professional and academic knowledge in body fluid analysis and to gain deeper insights into analytical, biochemical, and microbiological evaluation methods. Additionally, I aimed to observe laboratory workflows in a different country, share experiences about the healthcare and laboratory systems.
During the one-week program, I had the opportunity to participate in both theoretical and practical training sessions. The main topics covered included; Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis, Body cavity fluid evaluation, Synovial fluid analysis, Urine diagnostics, including cytological examination, Parasitological and immunoserological diagnostics In addition to these modules, I was also introduced to the hematology laboratories and observed the use of flow cytometry analyzers.
I had the chance to be directly involved in the daily routine laboratory workflow, starting from sample collection and processing to analysis and reporting. This gave me an excellent overview of the entire total testing process. Moreover, I gained practical experience in the microscopic examination of body fluids and practiced different staining techniques (e.g.,Stein–Malber staining), which improved my diagnostic and morphological evaluation skills.
This exchange program significantly contributed to my professional and academic development; enhanced my knowledge and practical skills in the analysis of body fluids, provided the opportunity to observe and learn different laboratory workflows and technologies, allowed me to participate in the full routine laboratory process, from pre-analytical to post-analytical phases, which expanded my perspective, encouraged me to transfer the knowledge and practices learned into my home institution.
Besides the academic program, the Exchange also allowed me to discover Białystok and Warsaw, two beautiful Polish cities with rich cultural and historical heritage. I was particularly impressed by the architectural beauty, cultural atmosphere, and hospitality of Polish people. I also enjoyed exploring the local culture and cuisine, and especially loved tasting the traditional Polish dessert pączki, which was a delightful part of my experience.
I deeply appreciated the warm and inclusive environment provided by Assoc. Prof. Olga M. Koper-Lenkiewicz and her team, which made me feel at home from the very first day. Their generosity and professionalism created a welcoming and inspiring atmosphere. In particular, I would like to emphasize that I was truly impressed by Assoc. Prof. Olga Koper-Lenkiewicz, whose kindness, mentorship, and human warmth left a deep impact on me.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Assoc. Prof. Olga M. Koper-Lenkiewicz and Prof. Joanna Kamińska for their excellent guidance, teaching, and hospitality during my stay. And also I would like to thank my mentor Prof. Çiğdem Sönmez in Turkey for her continuous support and encouragement in my professional journey.
I am also grateful to the EFLM Board, the EFLM Professional Committee, Prof. Tomris Özben, Prof. Evgenia Homsak, and the EFLM Office for organizing this unique and valuable Exchange and Bursary programme. I am deeply thankful for being given this opportunity to broaden my knowledge, improve my practical skills, and experience cultural exchange in Poland.
Dziękuję bardzo. Serdeczne pozdrowienia z Turcji.
